Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

by - May 28, 2015

Pinterest is my best friend lately; I've been surfing through it all day long. At nights, if all my friends are asleep, I usually repin pictures on Pinterest; that's like my favourite pass-time these days, especially at nights. I go through it until my eyes feel crazily heavy, and that's when I know it's time to close my shutters.
On Pinterest, the most things I've repinned recently are under the Boards Indian, Home, and Food & Recipes.

Under the Food & Recipes board, there are some really lip-smacking recipes. Yesterday noon, while I was just lying down and going through Pinterest, I had a sudden craving to have something cheesy. I immediately went through the pins under the foods, and came across this one. After I opened it, I read it required cream. I couldn't go down to buy cream, and the natural cream that floats on milk wasn't sufficient enough for the recipe. So I searched for this recipe on Pinterest to try my luck and praying really hard if there was a different recipe that didn't involve cream in it. I found few, but they required meat and chicken pieces. Being an 'egg-tarian', I obviously refused those recipes. That's when I went through the mother of internet--Google--to search the recipe. I came across a recipe of the same dish that didn't require cream or any animal pieces. (I'll link that page below.)

Here's how I made the Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes; and guess what? I just used one cheese cube!

Preparation Time: 15 Minutes
Cooking Time: 45 Minutes to 1 hour
Serves: 3
Veg/Non-Veg: Veg

Ingredients:

  • 2 Peeled and Sliced Potatoes
  • Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Flour (Wheat or Maida)
  • 2 Cups Milk
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cheese - 1 Cube
  • Chilli Flakes

Special Utensils Required:

  • Potato Peeler
  • Microwave-safe Dish/Pan

Steps:

 1. Take two large potatoes, and peel them.

2. Cut thin slices of the potatoes.

3. On the stove, keep a pan on low flame. Put butter.
4. After the butter melts, put flour. Immediately stir.
5. Pour cold milk, and stir. Let it rest.
6. Add salt and pepper to the pan.
7. Grate half cheese cube and put inside. Stir. In case you find the mixture (sauce) too thick, pour in some more milk, and add other ingredients, if needed.

 8. Boil the slices slightly.
 9. In a micro-pan, add a single layer of potato slices.
10. Pour cheese-sauce.
11. Put slices of potatoes again. Pour sauce on top of it. Repeat until all the slices are used.
12. Grate remaining half of the cheese cube on top.
13. Garnish with chilli flakes, and other spices, according to you.
14. Set the microwave oven on 180 degree for 45 minutes, and grill.
15. Serve with hot and spicy ketchup.

NOTE:

  • I had not boiled the potatoes, so they were tough while eating.
  • I did not put chilli flakes as I didn't have them.
  • I had kept the dish for 30 minutes; but you keep it for 45 minutes. In the original recipe, they say to keep for 1 whole hour.

I am glad that I finally disclosed the secret behind that white cheesy sauce. I had had the sauce from one of the sizzlers at Poptates, and was wondering how they make this delicacy. I am thankful for my curiosity and my cravings that led me to this wonderful white sauce, and the recipe, of course.
Do let me know your experience. You can add more spices and more taste to these scalloped potatoes. The best thing I liked about this recipe is that we required just one cheese cube; one cheese cube divided by 3, which means we consume hardly any cheese.

Write below asking any queries or let me know after you make it.
