how to be the best intern

I used to do this in the first few weeks of my internship. I used to get lot of tasks from different people of my team. There are three people in my team, but for an additional supplement, which will be out in November, we have hired freelancers. So, I have seven people, excluding me, right now. They pass on some work, and then it gets too confusing. On top of that, sometimes those who are not in the team, but still are writing for our sections, give me a task; I have to keep a track of that too.

So how do I do that? Now remembering all the tasks seems easy, but this was not the case earlier. If you too get lot of tasks, there's this amazing method I follow--writing everything down.

As soon as I reach office, I turn on the computer. (I reach 15 minutes before time, by the way.) I go through my mailbox and usually find at least three mails for me. I flag and pin them to the top so that I don't forget to reply to them. It's easier to find your mails if you flag them. At Vogue, all the edit interns share one email ID; so, the interns under the teams features, fashion features, beauty, and fashion, all share one ID. Flagging just helps all my mails to stand out.

As soon as I flag, I open my notepad, and write the date; under the date, I start writing tasks. For example, if I have to reply to three people, I will write:

☐ Reply abc
☐ Reply xyz
☐ Reply rst

As soon as the tasks are done, I strike off and check the boxes. This is how I keep the track.

Also, I have to save images that we would use in the magazine. If I'm sending mails to ten companies, I write down names one below the other in my notepad. For the title, I write down the name of the article, along with the person's name who has asked me to save the pictures. For example, if my colleague Sonal asks me to get pictures from companies, in the title, I mention Sonal's name as well. (This is one super important tip.) Due to this, I can easily scan through pages if ever Sonal asks me about which companies are yet to send the pictures.

These are the tips I follow; the main solid tip will always be WRITING IT DOWN.
Jot down everything and I'm sure you'll remember everything.

What method do you follow at workplace?

You can say I had a writer's block for a week. Firstly, I had no topic on mind, and secondly, I was too occupied to think of any. But finally, here I am; back with a topic.

time management for working students

I'm sure you must have interned or worked while still pursuing a course. If you're like me, for whom getting good grades is important, then handling two things simultaneously can be a task. I'm witnessing this difficult situation, and I think I might just have a solution.

We have a test on this Saturday and the portion is as vast as a final exam's. Our professor announced this test on last Saturday, which means, there's just a week's time to prepare.

All of us have different lives, and the amount of free time we get varies too. Therefore, I'm gonna list down few probable time-slots in which you can study. In the end, the main motive will be studying (or reading) as much as possible.

WHILE COMMUTING
If you're someone who travels for more than 30 minutes to get to a place, then this can be a good time for you to study. I have been studying in train since the last two days and I've read around 100 slides out of 500 or so. I study on my cell and if ever a topic is beyond my understanding, I write it down in OneNote. And then, when I would sit for revising, I would ask my classmates and get those doubts cleared. So far, this method is working for me.

AT OFFICE (IN YOUR FREE TIME)
Some days, you have less amount of work. Instead of wasting it by socializing or being on social media, just open whatever study material has been given, and study! If ever your boss sees you doing this, he or she will be impressed. Plus, why to waste your time, when you can utilize it for studying?

EARLY MORNING
If you live in your office's vicinity, then you can wake up at 6:00 instead of 9:00 and study. Morning can be a peaceful time to study. Use this tranquility to your advantage, and open those books!

AFTER REACHING HOME
If you reach home by 8:00 pm, instead of wasting time, study. Have your food, rest for 15 minutes, and then finish all the assigned portion for the day.

How do you make time to study?

My best friend had purchased this eyeliner and spoke well of it. I had tried it on myself before buying and I vaguely remember how it looked. But, since I was drained of my old eyeliner by Maybelline, I laid my hands on this.
I'd never heard of the makeup company Hilary Rhoda, but the packaging truly appealed to me.

PACKAGING
I found the packaging rather posh. The pen comes in a black glossy finish with beautiful embossed golden fonts. The tip gives the pen a sharp look. The cap fits perfectly and is reliable. Due to the trustworthy packaging, travelling is not an issue. (Bonus: It slips in the vanity pouch without a hitch!)

APPLICATION AND LOOK
The application is as smooth as silk. The tip glides effortlessly, and the cat eyes you always wanted? Well, that's possible too. You can draw a line as fine as a hair using the thin tip.
The look? It is glossy and not matte. If you want to wear it for parties, then this will compliment suitably; however, if you want to wear it to office or college, then the gloss will be a bit over-the-top. This is the lone reason why I don't like it very dearly.

LASTING POWER
The liner lasts until you wash it off. The gloss retains too.

SMUDGE-FREE/WATERPROOF?
It is smudge-free, but wait for few seconds after application and then play around with your eyes. The eyeliner is waterproof in a way, i.e., if few water-drops fall on your eyes, the liner won't come off or smudge. However, removing it becomes difficult. This is yet another disadvantage of the product. When you wash your face using a cleanser, you'll look like a drug-addict panda. You'll have to thoroughly wash your eyes.

PROS
- Looks exquisite
- Inexpensive
- Smooth application
- Glossy finish
- Easy application
- Travel friendly
- Smudge-free

CONS
- Not matte
- Not fully waterproof
- Difficult to remove

CONCLUSION
If you're looking for glossy eyeliners, buy it.

You know how music can lift your mood. The song 'Firework' by Katy Perry is a motivational song. If you're feeling low, tune in to that song. And if you're feeling low and don't have access to headphones, make this as your cellphone's wallpaper!

This quote will remind you of how dynamic you truly are. Every time you think you're trash (like a plastic bag), this quote will cheer you up.

In case you've not listened to this song, here's a video, plus lyrics:

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?
Screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

You don't have to feel like a wasted space
You're original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow
And when it's time you'll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through-ough-ough

'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colours burst
Make 'em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

'Cause, baby, you're a firework!

If you're a good cook, it's profitable to you and others, but that's not where the kitchen story ends; you need to have some kitchen etiquette while cooking, or just while doing anything in the kitchen.
Hygiene is a major part of kitchen etiquette as this is food you're talking about; it's something that's going to jump in the interiors of your body. Therefore, make sure you follow these necessary kitchen etiquette rules after wearing the chef's hat.

basic kitchen etiquette rules to follow

Here are some of the rules passed down by my mom to me:

RINSE YOUR HANDS
I'm such a cleanliness freak when it comes to kitchen hygiene. I might not be an ardent follower of hygiene outside, but when in the kitchen, I want everything clean. When I wake up in the morning, I wash my hands and brush my teeth, and only then enter the kitchen. I also ask my mom to do the same, as she makes my lunchbox early morning.

RINSE UTENSILS
This is so important. I'm lazy otherwise. But when it comes to this, I always, mark my words, always wash any utensil--be it a glass, dish, spoon, or fork--before using it for making food.

RINSE VEGGIES
This is clearly one of the 'dos' we've learnt when in school. Rinse your veggies, sprouts, and all the meat (if at all you rinse meat, that is).

TIE YOUR HAIR
Please, tie your hair. We don't want oily strands in the yummy dal that we're eating like a pig.

COVER FOOD WHEN IT IS UNATTENDED
After taking the first serving, don't fail to cover the utensil with a lid. Sometimes it happens that we're so eager to eat our favourite dish, that we forget to cover the food. You can surely forget covering but only if you like the flavour of cockroaches in your food.

RINSE SPOONS, FORKS, PLATES (BEFORE SERVING)
Again, we are so eager to eat the freshly cooked food that we just put in the spoon and start hogging. Before the serving-utensils touch the food, make sure to rinse them. What's the use of maintaining so much of hygiene while cooking if the spoon you'll directly put in mouth is not clean?

CLEAN KITCHEN PLATFORM AFTER COOKING
I do this by default. I somewhat don't like those who don't clean the platform after cooking. Their attitude towards cooking is casual. Once you're done eating, clean the kitchen platform.

PUT LEFTOVER INGREDIENTS BACK
Also, you'd want to keep masala packets, sauces, and other ingredients used back to the place they belong.

MAINTAIN A SEPARATE DUSTBIN FOR WET WASTE
Try maintaining a separate bin or a plastic bag for all the wet waste.

RINSE USED PLATES (BEFORE THE MAID WASHES THEM)
Once you're finished eating, rinse your dish. Also, rinse all the utensils before sleeping. I don't do this, but my mom does. This enables the maid to have food-free utensils to wash.

REGULARLY CLEAN THE KITCHEN
Also, regularly clean and maintain the kitchen. Chimneys, exhaust fans, and other such appliances should be cleaned, as lot of dust can accumulate over their tiny parts.

What would you add to the list?

Today, three years back, a blog named The Pretty City Girl was formed. I didn't know that it could achieve so many things, and also help me achieve so many things. Out of all my possessions, my blog is my biggest achievement; my blog is something I'm most proud of. It has not just pushed me to be a better writer, or for that matter, unleashing my hidden potential, but also gave me a strong reason to never settle for anything less.

All the fantastic things happening in my career are because of this phenomenon--a phenomenon that has completely changed my life. What I am today, what I have achieved, and what is yet to achieve, is all because of my blog.

I never was a writer, like I've told you. I never knew I could even write. Sure, I wanted to pursue journalism when I was in school, but I had never planned my life accordingly. After junior college, I had listed two options--Bachelor's of Management Studies (BMS) and Bachelor's of Mass Media (BMM). I don't know how I settled on BMM (maybe because my college didn't offer BMS course back then and that I badly wanted to stay in the same college?).

Even in the first year of BMM, I was an ordinary writer--not someone who would confidently give her write-up to an English professor. Later, slowly, with eagerness to learn more and more grammar rules and improving myself constantly, I developed my English skills. I don't boast of having the largest vocabulary or the best of writing styles, but whatever I possess, I'm darn confident about it.

Since a couple of months, I am not giving the same amount of time and affection to my blog; but the blog's still going on. I had written about how my dad sits on PC and how difficult it was to write on a small screened laptop. But now I own a Surface Pro 4, and the task of writing and editing is a piece of cake.

This is all I have to say about completing three years.

Here's to many more... xoxo

My supervisor had asked me to write a small piece on Healthy Food Places in India. I wrote a simple article, and made sure I did not use the Oxford Comma, which I'm obsessed about. I also used better vocab, but then eventually, my supervisor explained how I needed to avoid words like delicious, great, etc. That's when I decided to go through all the food articles on Vogue.in and find out terms, idioms, or in general, anything that will help me improve my food-writing. If ever I come across some more terms later, I'll make a new list and post here (so don't worry).

You can avoid carrying lunchbox to college, because you probably can survive on a wadapav from the canteen, but when it comes to work, you're in the office for more than six hours. You have to carry a lunchbox, but just because there's not enough space in your handbag, you don't carry it. Also, handles of some of your handbags are so weak, that even if you have space in the bag, you still wouldn't carry anything that's heavy or takes up space.
I do that; I avoid carrying anything heavy, but now my internship demands food. I carry meals/snacks for breakfast, lunch, late afternoon, and for evening. For lunch, I carry a heavy meal, and for other meals, you can check this post out. I have mentioned everything in details in that post, so you'll get an exact idea.

As I have to carry a heavy meal and some snacks for the eventide, there are a couple of boxes and a tiny water bottle to go with. I follow two methods, depending on which type of bag I'm carrying:

FOR BAGS WITH WEAK HANDLES
I always fear bag's handles coming off. I have avoided carrying things just because of this fear, that I had to find a solution. So whenever I'm carrying my totes, which are large, but I feel have weak handles, I go for something in addition, like a shopping bag. I have a cute pink coloured shopping bag, which is made out of cloth. I keep my bottle, lunch box, snacks, (and umbrella) inside this shopping bag. Whenever I'm walking, I remove the shopping bag from my tote and hang it on my shoulder. Whenever I sit, I keep that bag inside my tote so that I don't have to look after two things amidst the maddening train crowd.
This method is great because you can either keep food inside your tote or outside it, depending on the situation.

FOR BAGS WITH LESS SPACE
You can't always carry larger bags. Whenever you want to pair that adorable small handbag with your stunning outfit, you wonder where you will store your lunchbox. It's simple; just use a matching paper bag and keep your food inside it. That way, your look for the day won't ruin, plus paper bags have their own charm, I reckon!

So, what's your trick?

SHOWING MY BEST FACE
As I'm working at Vogue, I want to put my best face forward. In the start, I always talk less, and always am under confident when it comes to speaking with colleagues and bosses. I feel like I'm interrupting them and so am hesitant to start a conversation. However, slowly, I'm gaining ground and being my own self--not exactly the way I am with my friends, but the way I am with my acquaintances and professors. I want to be the best of what I can be and show my boss how sharp I truly am. Currently, I intuit that my impression is ordinary in front of my colleagues and my boss, which I absolutely detest. I'm one of those people who start off on a very bad note; i.e., my first impression is pitiful. Later, slowly, I think that people like my personality more than they do at our first meet.
So, nevertheless, September's all gonna be displaying my true witty self. I hope I succeed at doing that.

SMILING
I must put more efforts in befriending colleagues or at least getting acquainted with them. For the starters, I just have to smile at them, which I do. I must start talking with them, so that I develop a happy work environment.

DISCOVERING MORE OUTFITS
When you have to work in one of the finest companies, you always have to dress smartly. And when you have to work in a fashion magazine org, you have to be better. Dressing gorgeously is not a rule, and people don't look at you in an indifferent way if you're not a fashion diva; but, this becomes an unwritten rule. You must look good to feel good; at least that's what I take as gospel. Therefore, September is when I'll discover more outfit options and play around with my accessories too.

THIRD ANNIVERSARY
TPCG's Leather Anniversary is on the 15th and I'm excited about the same. Though I'll be busy this year, I definitely have few things in mind. I was planning on a giveaway, but unfortunately, the company I was collaborating with could not continue the deal. I'll try collaborating with a different company, or else, might go with a giveaway individually.

I'm at my Pune House, and there's no internet connection here. Earlier, I had WiPod, but we no longer use it as the company has changed its packs, and there's no suitable pack for us any more. Therefore, I'm without any internet connection.

If you're a dedicated blogger, you would want to write blog under all sorts of circumstances. You might encounter a no-WiFi hotel or if you're travelling by a train or bus, you won't have WiFi there. What to do when such crisis hits?

The answer is simple: using your mobile data and sharing it on your laptop via WiFi Hotspot.

But, but; when you're travelling, you're already using so much of your mobile data that spending more just doesn't seem convincing. On top of it, if you're a prepaid sim holder, then your data pack can extinct. Therefore, you don't just need WiFi hotspots, but a trick, too.

THE TRICK

  1. Open your blog's dashboard (when there's no internet).
  2. Connect your laptop with the mobile data and quickly go to New Post.
  3. Turn off the mobile data immediately.
  4. Now, under offline mode, write your post.
  5. Once you're done, have checked grammar, and the post is good to publish, connect to the internet again, and quickly Publish the post.

TIP: To save more data, the designing of blog graphic and sharing the post across social media can be done on your cellphone.

Though there's not much of physical exertion (apart from travelling), there's indeed a little amount of mental exertion, which ultimately makes me tired and leads to increase in the appetite. I am not a person who religiously carries a lunchbox wherever she goes, but whenever there's office, I do. I have a beautifully packed lunchbox, which carries out all its functions.

We often are confused about what to eat throughout the day. I've listed down what I eat and some more ideas to keep you hydrated and happy throughout a work-day:

BREAKFAST (7:30 AM)
I have breakfast before leaving, that is, at 7:30 am. I have fresh food that my mom is making for lunch early morning. I eat two polis (rotis) and the bhaaji (sabzee) she's making. Sometimes I go for cereals or oats. You can go for the easy to make recipes like a bowl of cereals, muesli, oats, cornflakes, etc. You can top it with chopped fruits and nuts. You can make sandwiches by adding few tomato and cucumber slices, dust some black pepper and sprinkle chilli flakes. Don't forget to spread butter!

'SECOND' BREAKFAST (11:30 AM)
By the time I reach, I start feeling hungry. Unless and until I'm too hungry, I don't have a second breakfast. But, if I am, which is mostly by 11:30, I either have second-breakfast (packed by my mom) or have coffee/tea from the office's pantry. For this second-breakfast, you can have sandwiches, fruits, upma, pohe, sabudana khichadi, sheera, or anything that you would otherwise have as a breakfast item.

LUNCH (1:30 AM)
By 1:30, I have lunch from my lunchbox. I carry two polis and bhaaji for lunch. If not this, I carry rice, paratha, dosa, or idli. Sometimes, my mom surprises me by giving sliced tomatoes and cucumbers as an addition. You too can carry something that is filling, but not junk. For a complete meal, carry daal, buttermilk, and salad too.

COLD COFFEE (4:30 PM)
If I'm tired by working, I drink cold coffee or hot coffee at around 4:30 pm. As the coffee has milk, and is in abundance, my tummy is quite filled. You can also have green tea or the chai. Along with that, you can eat protein balls made of oats, honey, cocoa powder, and nuts.

EVENING SNACKS (6:45 PM)
Then, when I'm in the train, heading for home, I have my third lunchbox, which is an apple, toasted bread slices, or dry Indian snacks. The snacks include chiwda, farsan, bakarwadi, kachori, or biscuits. The idea is to fill-up, no matter how flimsy or how heavy. Another healthy option, apart from fruits or snacks, is nutrition bars or chikkis. Both are filled with nutrients and will keep your gut happy until you have dinner.

DINNER (9:00 PM)
Then finally, after reaching home, I have dinner, which is a heavy one, as I think I need a heavier, fully-packed dinner. I get tired until I reach home, plus the apple I've had at 6:40 doesn't help much. For dinner, since you exert much due to travelling, you need good food. I eat two polis (rotis) with bhaaji (sabzee) and aamti (daal). Sometimes, I also have a bit of rice and salad to go along. If you don't have to travel much and don't get fatigued by the end of the day, you can eat less. Be careful of how much you eat at dinner, as you don't have any physical activity, since you're sitting at your desk full day. You don't wanna get fatter!

What do you carry?

August has been a good month. I enjoyed more, was happy more, and I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm happy right now, at this very moment.
Just like I write about my favourites of every month at the end of the months, I'm listing down some of the key moments/things that made me happy in the month of August:

Internship at Vogue
This definitely had to top the list. I have never dreamt of getting inside Vogue so soon. It happened and I have to pinch myself in between as a reminder that I really am a part of the Vogue team.

Good Music
I learnt what good music is. I downloaded various instrumental songs of Bollywood, along with a couple of melodious Scottish bagpipe tunes. Incredible, the power of music is!

Beach Swimming
I swam in beach after many months, thus reliving my childhood days when I didn't know how to swim and when water scared me and when my relatives (including my father and brother) had become my sworn enemies as they forced me to go deep inside the sea. I would like to throw you guys back in those days, before grade 6, when I didn't know swimming. All the men from my family were bullies and used to trouble me. They used to run behind me and I used to try to run towards the shallower side of the swimming pool with my tiny legs. Ah! Good old days! I'm glad that I joint swimming classes in one of the summer vacations. I hated them then, but those days were truly beautiful!

Bhimashankar Trip
The trip to the Bhimashankar temple was a drive in heaven. Covered from all the sides with fog, we enjoyed the road that took us to this temple. A passably recommended place during monsoon.

What were your best moments from last month?
