Kitchen Etiquette Rules to Follow

by - September 17, 2016

If you're a good cook, it's profitable to you and others, but that's not where the kitchen story ends; you need to have some kitchen etiquette while cooking, or just while doing anything in the kitchen.
Hygiene is a major part of kitchen etiquette as this is food you're talking about; it's something that's going to jump in the interiors of your body. Therefore, make sure you follow these necessary kitchen etiquette rules after wearing the chef's hat.

basic kitchen etiquette rules to follow

Here are some of the rules passed down by my mom to me:

RINSE YOUR HANDS
I'm such a cleanliness freak when it comes to kitchen hygiene. I might not be an ardent follower of hygiene outside, but when in the kitchen, I want everything clean. When I wake up in the morning, I wash my hands and brush my teeth, and only then enter the kitchen. I also ask my mom to do the same, as she makes my lunchbox early morning.

RINSE UTENSILS
This is so important. I'm lazy otherwise. But when it comes to this, I always, mark my words, always wash any utensil--be it a glass, dish, spoon, or fork--before using it for making food.

RINSE VEGGIES
This is clearly one of the 'dos' we've learnt when in school. Rinse your veggies, sprouts, and all the meat (if at all you rinse meat, that is).

TIE YOUR HAIR
Please, tie your hair. We don't want oily strands in the yummy dal that we're eating like a pig.

COVER FOOD WHEN IT IS UNATTENDED
After taking the first serving, don't fail to cover the utensil with a lid. Sometimes it happens that we're so eager to eat our favourite dish, that we forget to cover the food. You can surely forget covering but only if you like the flavour of cockroaches in your food.

RINSE SPOONS, FORKS, PLATES (BEFORE SERVING)
Again, we are so eager to eat the freshly cooked food that we just put in the spoon and start hogging. Before the serving-utensils touch the food, make sure to rinse them. What's the use of maintaining so much of hygiene while cooking if the spoon you'll directly put in mouth is not clean?

CLEAN KITCHEN PLATFORM AFTER COOKING
I do this by default. I somewhat don't like those who don't clean the platform after cooking. Their attitude towards cooking is casual. Once you're done eating, clean the kitchen platform.

PUT LEFTOVER INGREDIENTS BACK
Also, you'd want to keep masala packets, sauces, and other ingredients used back to the place they belong.

MAINTAIN A SEPARATE DUSTBIN FOR WET WASTE
Try maintaining a separate bin or a plastic bag for all the wet waste.

RINSE USED PLATES (BEFORE THE MAID WASHES THEM)
Once you're finished eating, rinse your dish. Also, rinse all the utensils before sleeping. I don't do this, but my mom does. This enables the maid to have food-free utensils to wash.

REGULARLY CLEAN THE KITCHEN
Also, regularly clean and maintain the kitchen. Chimneys, exhaust fans, and other such appliances should be cleaned, as lot of dust can accumulate over their tiny parts.

What would you add to the list?
xoxo
